particular bird expertise. The following

VOLUNTEER
AGREEMENT
PLEASE
READ CAREFULLY. This is not meant to
intimidate you nor to cast a negative light on exotic birds. Rescued birds are no more and no less likely to
behave in an aggressive or unpredictable manner than any others. But, we want to make you aware of possibilities when working with
them.
The birds St. Louis Avian Rescue (STAR)
places in foster homes have been surrendered, abandoned, or in some way displaced. They may have been abused or neglected. There may only be limited information
available regarding their previous environment.
STAR foster birds may not have been to a veterinarian yet. Even for those who have, avian medicine is a
relatively new discipline, and it is possible for a bird to be a carrier of a
disease that is undetectable with the tests available today.
You should be aware of possible behavior problems in these birds. Exotic birds are still wild animals, and we
do not know everything there is to know about their reactions to stress, pain,
strange environments, etc. Some species
are more temperamental than others, and many birds will behave aggressively
when they feel threatened. If you decide
to volunteer in a capacity which brings you into close contact with the birds,
you should exhibit caution until you are fully familiar with the particular
bird.
Exotic birds can also be destructive. In their native habitats they bite and
chew. They are also curious animals and
will seek out new objects to chew. Be
aware of the possibility of damage to
clothes, eyeglasses, hats, etc. unless you are careful.
I certify that I have never been charged
with nor convicted of animal abuse or neglect in Missouri or any other
state. I certify that no one in my
household has been charged with nor convicted of animal abuse or neglect in
Missouri or any other state. (Please Initial)
I, the undersigned, acknowledge there are
risks in visiting and/or handling exotic birds, including illness or injury
and/or damage to property. I agree to
release St.
Louis Avian Rescue from any liability in the event.
